Automated pre- and post-coating in Weinsheim

The coating process for components has been further upgraded at the magnesium die-casting plant in Weinsheim. After the components are cleaned, they are misted with a fine powder that melts into an even lacquer layer in the furnace and then hardens into a resistant protective layer. For the most part, the powder is applied automatically by a robot that moves along horizontal and vertical axes. This process was previously not capable of handling more complex geometries, so manual post-processing by employees was required.

Now, thanks to the integration of intelligent camera systems, it is possible to coat even challenging component shapes entirely automatically. The systems specifically identify areas of inadequate powder coverage and then precisely and efficiently control the recoating by the robot. This not only eliminates the need for demanding manual rework but also increases work safety by reducing employees’ exposure to powder dust.
